A:   The BYTES Power Smarts stories can be read together aloud as a family, or children can read them on their own depending on their reading abilities. FAMILY CONVERSATIONS

Q: Why are family conversations important?
A:   Research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University consistently finds that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, become depressed, or use drugs. Dinner conversations help parents learn more about their children's lives, better understand the challenges they face, build a family identity, and pass down family legends and values. Children learn vocabulary, how a conversation is structured, and how to solve problems.

David Dickinson, a professor of education at Vanderbilt University, found that mealtimes "were a much stronger predictor of how later development would go for children's language and literacy development." The children who did well ate dinners with families that maintained complex conversations with explanation and storytelling (Spiegel, Alex. "The Family Dinner Deconstructed," National Public Radio, February 7, 2008).
